Your guide to using CBD Ointments

So, you decided to get a CBD ointment and start with the usage. But, before you go ahead and buy it, you’re wondering: how to use a CBD topical? Look no more, you found your CBD topical guide.

The use of CBD topicals is claimed to have several various benefits for the user. According to various research, treating certain skin conditions and accelerating sports recovery by providing pain relief are some of the most positive aspects of topical CBD usage.

According to a study published in 2019, the topical use of CBD  ‘is a safe and effective non-invasive alternative for improving the quality of life in patients with some skin disorders, especially on inflammatory background’, while this research published in 2020 says that CBD presents an opportunity for treating pain. So, the science backing up CBD topical usage is out there, saying that CBD usage is in fact harmless and beneficial.

However, the million-dollar question remains – how exactly does the topical usage work, and how should I use it?

How Does Topical CBD Work?

As we’ve already mentioned in our previous article, when talking about the hows of CBD, it’s impossible not to mention the endocannabinoid system. This system that exists in our bodies is the only reason why CBD actually has any effect on us.

We know that there are certain CBD receptors in the human body (CB1 and CB2) and that they interact with our ECS. You consume CBD, it gets into your bloodstream, activates the ECS, and magic happens. But how exactly can it get into your bloodstream if you don’t consume it but apply it to the skin? The answer? It doesn’t.

Research shows that both of the CBD receptors can be found in epidermal keratinocytes, cutaneous nerve fibers, dermal cells, melanocytes, eccrine sweat glands, and hair follicles. Also, CBD receptors are shown to bind to TRP (Transient Receptor Potential) receptors that can be found in various types of skin cells that are involved in skin barrier maintenance, inflammatory processes, and more.

So, instead of getting into your bloodstream, the CBD gets absorbed by the skin and finds the receptors. When you apply a topical on and massage it into your skin, the CBD pierces deep into the dermal and subdermal levels, rather than just staying on the surface of your skin.

The ointment then attaches itself with the CBD receptors in the muscle tissue and the nerves and in that way activates the endocannabinoid system. The receptors in the nerve help reduce the perception of pain, while the ones in muscle tissues and skin work to reduce inflammation.

How Do You Use CBD Ointment?

You just apply it directly to the affected area. CBD topicals come in various shapes and forms – roll-ons, salves, sprays, creams, etc. Before applying it to the skin, clean and pat dry your body and then gently massage into the skin.

We make our Insta-Ease topical in the form of a roll-on, in order to achieve more concentration and efficiency. We do that by using natural, organic oils and combining them with our pure hemp oil. This way, no extra ingredients that could jeopardize the CBD concentration are added, and the Insta-Ease stays smaller in size and much easier (and cleaner!) to apply.

How To Know The Dosage?

The dosage of the product depends on its type and concentration of CBD in it. It should all be clearly stated on the product as well as the instructions for use. Insta-Ease, for example, can be applied 2-3 times a day by rubbing it on the affected area.

With topicals and their dosage, some math could be involved if you want to apply a specific amount of CBD. For example, if you want to use a cream, you will have to see the total amount of CBD in the container, divide that number by the number of milliliters in the package to find out how much CBD is in one milliliter, and then do some more math to find out how much mg of the cream you need to get the desired amount of CBD.  Then, you think about how many times per day you want to use it and divide some more.

Top-Level Benefits of Topical CBD

Based on the studies mentioned above, topical CBD can provide a wide range of benefits by targeting the cannabinoid receptors found beneath the skin. Several different skin and pain ailments are said to be eased or treated with CBD topicals over time:

The Takeaway

Even though there is still a lot of research needed for the world to be 101% sure about using CBD on a daily, there is a lot of research available that supports the use of it even now. Various research that can be found in this article suggests that CBD topicals are beneficial in several ways. However, it’s important to pay attention to the quality of CBD products, the source of CBD, how it is supplied, and how it’s manufactured.

Before you start using CBD, do your research, look at various brands and products and find the one the most suitable for you. Find a high-quality product with the right potency and an ethical source, and pay attention to the fine print. Also, make sure to check if CBD is legal in your state and take all other things into account (like your health issues, tolerance, etc.).
